Abstract : this thesis is a study of the emblematic gesture as used in Australia, but has relevance beyond this cultural context. It incorporates a reexamination of definitions of the emblem leading to its redefinition, an account of the experimentation undertaken to establish the identity of a number of emblems found in Australia, as well as analyses of a selection of these.
