L'une des principales caractéristiques des langues naturelles est leur perpétuelle évolution qui peut se traduire par des enrichissements ou par des pertes de formes et de construction. Ce manuel est divisé en deux sections : la première est théorique, tandis que la seconde consiste en un entraînement pratique avec documents sonores à l'appui. Dans la première partie, il est tout d'abord question d'une étude de l'appareil vocal et des matériaux bruts de la parole, à savoir les voyelles et les consonnes qui forment les sons. L'auteur traite ensuite du thème de l'accentuation, autrement dit les sons forts et les sons faibles, en s'intéressant plus particulièrement aux accents syllabiques, syntaxiques, ainsi qu'à la neutralisation des voyelles. Il termine enfin cette partie par le point de l'intonation où après avoir défini ce terme et rappelé son importance, il décrit le procédé de transcription simplifiée et les différentes formes d'intonation utilisées en anglais moderne.
