This textbook provides an introdcution to pragmatics from the point of view of Sperber and Wilson's Relevance Theory. The first part lays down the foundations of a relevance theoretic approach to utterance understanding, which is then applied to the analysis of a range of phenomena which have raised problems for the relationship between semantics and pragmatics such as reference, presupposition, non-thruth-conditional meaning; and to the analysis of phenomena traditionally discussed in litarary theory, including metaphor, irony and other stylistic effects.

Voici une introduction succinte au domaine de la pragmatique : une étude du langage du point de vue de ses utilisateurs, des choix qu'ils font, des contraintes qu'ils rencontrent quand ils utilisent le langage dans le contexte social et les effets que l'emploi de la langue a sur les autres intervenants de l'acte de communication. Ce livre a pour but d'introduire le lecteur aux complexités de l'usage de la langue et à l'usage du langage à des fins cognitives et sociales.

This is a succint introduction of pragmatics. The study of language from the point of view of its users, of the choices they make, the constraints they encounter in using language in social interaction and the effects their use of language has on other participants in an act of communication. This book aims to introduce the reader to the complexities of language use, and the use of language to cognitive and social effect.

"Introduction à la sociolinguistique" est un livre qui couvre la majeure partie des sujets habituellement traités dans les cours dits de "sociolinguistique" ou de "sociologie du langage". Chacun des sujets abordés se termine par un point de discussion qui aide à aller plus loin dans la réflexion. Ce livre qui s'adresse plutôt aux étudiants du premier degré peut également être utilisé comme livre de révision par d'autres d'un niveau plus élevé.

This book is entended to provide students with a sound, basic coverage of most of the topics dealt with in courses described either "Sociolinguistics" or "The sociology of language". Each of the topics covered, concludes with a discussion section designed to encourage further reflexion. This book rather intended to students in a first-level course, can also be used in a higher level course as a revision book.

This book develops the general principles of linguistic change that form the foundations of historical linguistics, dialectology and sociolinguistics. It is concerned with the factors that govern the internal development of linguistic structures : the mechanisms of change, the constraints on change, and the ways in which change is embedded in the larger linguistic system.
While it is generally believed that linguistic change is a product of earlier times, and that local dialects are disappearing, this work shows that rapid change is in progress in the cities of America and England, so that urban dialects are becoming more and more differentiated in the 20th century.
